The SDGENWEB was established in June 1996 by a group of genealogists with an interest in providing free genealogical data to the public. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in South Dakota, where collected databases would be stored. In addition to collecting these databases, other resources were made available including information on genealogical societies, posted queries, maps, and other aids.

At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web sites. Information on the state-level site is maintained by State Coordinator and Assistant State Coordinator . Likewise, each county has a coordinator who is responsible for providing assistance and maintaining a website of information for that specific county. Some counties are still available for adoption, and assistance is always needed in transcribing, locating, and preparing data for the SDGENWEB Archives. If you'd like to volunteer to assist in the SDGENWEB project, please contact one of the state coordinators.

If you're just beginning your genealogical research on your South Dakota ancestors, visit the Guide to South Dakota Genealogy first. It contains a broad overview of some of the general resources available to the researcher. After getting familiar with those resources, check out the SDGENWEB Archives which contain tons of free data for the researcher or visit the County Website for the location where your ancestor resided. Don't know the county? Use the tools in the Maps & Gazetteers section to find it. The Ancestors Database contains submissions from other researchers trying to locate others researching the same ancestor. You can find a list of published resources in the SDGENWEB Bookshelf, and a list of the addresses of most of the South Dakota Historical & Genealogical Societies in the state.

Adopt A SDGENWEB County!

Interested in helping out with the SDGENWEB project? How about adopting a county? There are always a couple of counties looking for a potential coordinator to look after them! Check the County List to see what counties are currently available. The county you want is already taken? Many coordinators are happy to share the task of county administration--try sending an email to the CC and see if they might want some help! Make sure to see what's involved in adopting a county first.

Featured Item -- SD BLM Database

The South Dakota Bureau of Land Management Database was extracted from data generously provided by the Bureau of Land Management. It includes every homestead, mining and timber claim, as well as cash sales and Indian allotments from 1859 to 1995. Not included are parcels still owned by the U. S. Government, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Forest Service, and the National Park System. The database comprises over 600,000 individual land records--totalling over 65 MB of raw text data! The data is arranged by county, then surname of the land patent purchaser. Each file contains information on how to order the patent files from the National Archives.
